2020 APTA Minority Scholarship Award Recipient

Juan shares is personal story.

It was an honor to serve as coordinator of the University of Miami's student-run pro bono physical therapy clinic. Eligibility to receive pro bono services included a lack of insurance and living below 200% of the federal poverty line. Growing up in a family with multiple medical conditions, I lived the financial burden the health care industry can inflict. This experience helped me to realize how difficult it can be for those facing systemic struggles to receive proper health care due to fear of the high cost of medicine. I am honored to be a part of an institution that values serving those in my community who are in need, and proud that I was able to make an impact in my city. This award is a testament to never forget your roots and to never forgo the opportunity to lend a helping hand and to make the world of difference to someone in need.
