Our association is guided by our strategic plan, which is updated every few years by the Board of Directors to identify new focus areas.

The strategic plan aligns with the association's mission statement and furthers APTA’s pursuit of our vision for the physical therapy profession.

Vision Statement for the Physical Therapy Profession

Transforming society by optimizing movement to improve the human experience.

Mission Statement for the Association

Building a community that advances the profession of physical therapy to improve the health of society.

Strategic Plan

The strategic plan aligns with the mission statement to position the association to make progress toward its vision. The plan includes goals and objectives that should be prioritized during the identified four-year time span; it does not reflect the totality of APTA's activities.

More About the Vision, Mission, and Strategic Plan

A vision statement is a succinct declaration of purpose — a guiding light for what we aspire to achieve. APTA’s vision statement was adopted by our House of Delegates in 2013. The House also adopted Guiding Principles to Achieve the Vision.

The current vision statement succeeds Vision 2020, which was adopted by the House in 2000 and was influential in guiding the profession over 13 years.

APTA’s vision statement sets direction for the profession, while the mission statement sets direction for the association. The current mission statement was adopted by APTA's Board of Directors in 2018.

The vision and mission are about motivating consistent and long-term progress, while the strategic plan is about establishing areas for short-term focus.

The current strategic plan, for 2022-2025, was developed by the Board after a yearlong process of researching member and potential member needs to determine an essential set of priorities as the association heads into its second century. Those strategic priorities are not an exhaustive list of APTA’s goals and objectives; instead they reflect areas that require added emphasis in response to member research.
