In this episode, APTA Vice President of Advancement Carmen Elliott sits down with Milly Polovich, a former patient of the pioneering Black physical therapist Vilma Evans.
Together, they discuss Evans' life, legacy, and barrier-breaking career, which helped open the door for future Black clinicians. Polovich also recalls her time spent with Evans in the 1950s, when Evans helped her regain mobility after a polio diagnosis.

Carmen Elliott is vice president of advancement at APTA and executive director of the Physical Therapy Fund. Elliott has been with the APTA Staff Team since 2006, having previously served as vice president of Insurer Relations. She holds a bachelor's degree in biology and a master’s degree in health care management. In 2016 she was selected as an ASAE Diversity Executive Leadership Program Scholar, and she became a certified association executive in 2018.
Milly Polovich is a former patient of barrier-breaking Black physical therapist Vilma Evans. Treated by Evans as a college student recovering from polio in 1954, Polovich developed a strong bond and friendship with Evans that went far beyond the clinic.
